I believe that teaching is, without a doubt, one of the most rewarding yet challenging careers in the world. Throughout my personal educational experience and journey in becoming a professional teacher, I have valued the ways in which teachers can cater for the diversity in their classroom. It takes a special person to raise a students’ expectation of themself and never give up on them despite how challenging it might be. It is for this reason that I am here because at some point, somebody did that for me.
My classroom will be a space of inclusiveness and safety. Where everyone, regardless of age, race, gender or ability will feel free from judgment, stereotypes or the fear of being labeled. The floor will be a space for quizzical discussion where a contribution from anyone is valued. The tables will be a space for collaborative and authentic work among its patrons. It is acknowledged that the students who make up the classroom are unique learners and each have a unique way to learn. I will approach each whole class lesson, teaching group or one-on-one conference with a different teaching approach, until I can better judge which one is better suited for each subject, group or person. I want my students to know that every time they make a mistake, are confused, or are challenged, it makes me a better teacher. I want my students to feel supported in a way that allows them to become the best learner they can be. I want my students one day to say “I am here because at some point, somebody did that for me”.
My classroom will be a space for positive and genuine relationships to be established. Where everyone, regardless of age, race, gender or ability will be encouraged to support and care for one another in order to breakdown the social barriers that can result from diversity. Creating relationships with students allows for the students to teach me, just as much as I will teach them. It helps me to delve deeper into understanding students’ individuality, their interests, their motivations and their attitudes towards learning. The classroom’s door will always be open to the families of the students who hold the same hope, that the year will be filled with a progression in learning, knowledge and acquirement of skills. With a combination of positive and genuine relationships with both students and families and an open-door policy, I will be an approachable role model for the classroom community and always lend a helping hand wherever possible. I want my students one day to say “I am here because at some point, somebody did that for me”.
My classroom will be a space for open and growth mindsets. Where everyone, regardless of age, race, gender or ability will be encouraged to adopt. I want my students to know that with a mindset of this kind, they can do anything, learn anything and achieve anything they want. Likewise, I want to always be open to multiple teaching approaches, theories or strategies that will aid my students in achieving their fullest potential. My classroom will be a powerful catalyst for both teachers and students to achieve the learning goals and promote life long learners. I want my students one day to say “I am here because at some point, somebody did that for me”.
