critical reflection #7:
Establishing positive relationships with students, teachers, families and colleagues sets the foundation for the interchangeability of learning, teaching and overall academic success (Baskerville, 2011). Engaging with colleagues accounts for learning together, teaching one another, and being accountable for each other’s success in the classroom (Baskerville, 2011). The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (2015) encourages family-school partnerships. It provides opportunities for relationships, trust, respect and responsibility to be established among the school community. Bronfrenbrenner’s (1995) ecological model demonstrates that a child’s family plays a crucial role in their ‘microsystem’. As families are the first educators of the students, it is the role of a teacher to build positive relationships in order to continue to help, nurture and teach their students (Bowes & Grace, 2012; DEEWER, 2015). Teachers also have a critical responsibility in meeting professional ethics, legislative, administrative and organizational requirements (Australian Human Right Commission, 2011). Understanding the different laws and regulations associated with ensuring student wellbeing is important in continuously contributing to a safe community environment.
Throughout my journey of becoming a teacher, I have realised that the support and knowledge of families is a rich source of information and expertise to tap into (DEEWER, 2015). For this reason, I believe that being able to communicate, connect and collaborate learning both within the classroom and at home is beneficial for the development of student learning. I also have a greater appreciation for existing teachers, who have dedicated their lives to not only educating students, but ensuring to always be up-to-date with policies and regulations that keep their students safe and supported.

Apart of maintaining a professional and responsible demeanour, I ensure that when entering a new school I read and comply with the school policies and regulations. I know that different schools prioritise different policies and codes of conduct, therefore it is my own responsibility to be fully aware and understand the procedures I need to follow.
Relates to: 7.1 Artefacts 5-7 demonstrate my understanding of how external professionals and community
representatives can broaden my knowledge and practice as a pre-service teacher. Artefact 6 and 7 represent my successful participation in both the Atherton Gardens Homework Support program and the Holiday Program. Both initiatives required me to work with other professionals and the broader community to not only support disadvantaged students, but to enhance my understanding of how working in different environments can affect my career in a positive way. I am yet to experience Artefact 5, however it was included as it is a piece of evidence confirming my application for volunteering in Fijian schools. Relates to: 7.4 |
Artefact 2 represents a certificate I achieved after completing a course in legislative, administrative and organisational policies. It helped to break down the different laws and regulations a teacher should know and act upon. Artefact 3 is an extract from a research essay I completed that required the knowledge and understanding of legislative practices involved in educational systems.

During a university unit of "Transitioning into the Profession", I got the opportunity to learn about 'KidsMatter' and most importantly, how this government initiative works to bring about positive relationships between teachers, parents/carers and students. Artefact 4 is a link to the website as it better explains how they bridge the gap between a child’s home life and their schooling life. From researching about the initiative, I was better able to understand the different types of effective strategies that aim to involve families in the schooling environment.
